National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day honors all small business owners on March 29 of each year. There are more than 27 million small businesses in the United States, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. Small businesses (defined as having less than 500 employees) are a vital part of our economy, comprising 99.7 percent of U.S. employer firms, 64 percent of net new private-sector jobs and 49.2 percent of private-sector employment. Many of these business are also family-owned organizations, like E&S Ring Management.
We are proud of our family-owned heritage. In 1959, two brothers — Ellis and Selden — had a dream and crafted their "garden apartment" communities in Southern California. At the time, the idea of an apartment community being centered around recreation facilities, lush landscaping and an open design was a pioneering concept. Having your own business often takes sacrifice, dedication and hard work — sometimes against all odds. Through sheer will and determination, the Ring brothers embraced the challenge of doing something different. In the end, they built up a company that specializes in creating upscale apartment communities that provides residents with hands-on, attentive service. This “living well” idea continues to power E&S Ring to this day.
What truly drives so many family businesses like E&S Ring is the sense of connection and identity nurtured between the owners, family members and employees. We make sure that E&S Ring employees “live well,” and feel cared-for and rewarded for their hard work. It is this very reason that so many employees stay with our company for 10, 20 or 30 years (and in some cases, longer!). Aside from competitive medical coverage and benefits, we offer basic life insurance coverage, 401K with employer match, employee assistance program, flexible spending benefits, wellness reimbursements, education assistance, employee referral bonuses and other reward-based initiatives, like our monthly “Caught in the Act” program. It’s important to us that our employees feel they are part of the E&S Ring family, and take pride not only in our company, but in our communities too.
To join us in supporting National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day and all small businesses on March 29, here are three simple things you can do:
1) Spread the word on social media. Use the #MomPopBusinessOwnersDay hashtag when posting on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
2) Shop local. Instead of Starbucks, head to the local Mom and Pop coffee shop down the street. Instead of shopping on Amazon for a day, pick something up at the cute boutique in your neighborhood.
3) Tell your friends and family. Make sure to let people know about the local business you’re trying to support. Strong word of mouth counts for a small business.
