8 Ways to Relax in Los Angeles

Labor Day is almost here and that ironically means it’s time to relax. You’ve probably been a busy bee this summer which may mean things have gotten a little hectic. Sometimes you just need a minute to slow down and catch your breath. At E&S Ring Management, we’re big on creating positive work-life balance for our employees — so they have plenty of opportunities to relax and recharge their batteries, so to speak. The long weekend is a great excuse to highlight some ways you can relax in our corporate headquarters’ home city of Los Angeles. Whether your idea of relaxing is a spa day, taking a hike or strolling in a beautiful green garden, here are a few ideas to help you unwind and escape the L.A. hustle and bustle today.

1. Read a good book.

Curl up with your Kindle, or the latest bestseller (bonus points if you do it in a hammock or on the beach!). Heck, why pay for a book if you can get one for free at your local library? Luckily for you, the Los Angeles Public Library system holds more than six million volumes in branch locations all over the city and serves more than 18 million residents — the largest population of any publicly funded library system in the United States. Residents of these E&S Ring communities also have the perk of having a communal library or library lounge: Mariners Village in Marina del Rey, L’Estancia in Studio City, Village Pointe in Northridge, Rancho Los Feliz and The Meadows in Culver City.

2. Get a massage.

Whether you want a simple one-hour Swedish massage or a full-day spa experience away from it all, the city is teeming with spas that fit both your pampering style and your budget. Burke Williams is an L.A. favorite, with locations in Woodland Hills, Santa Monica, Hollywood, Pasadena, Sherman Oaks, Torrance, Orange and Mission Viejo. If you like Thai massages, you might want to try Raven Spa, which has two locations in the city: Santa Monica and Silver Lake. Near E&S Ring corporate headquarters and not far from our Marina del Rey-area communities, there is the luxe and Zen-like Sisley Spa at The Ritz-Carlton. If you’re not in the mood to full de-clothe, Bao Foot Spa — in Santa Monica and Beverly Hills — offers a unique combination of reflexology and body massages as you sit in comfy massage chairs.

3. Gaze at art or create art.

Did you know that viewing art stimulates the brain in substantial and long-lasting ways? Like a good book, art has the power to take us on a journey to faraway lands or into the ancient past. It can conjure up strong emotions and deep thoughts within us, or simply set us aflame with awe by its visual beauty. While Los Angeles is not exactly known as an art city, there are dozens of fantastic museums within our borders. One of our favorites is the J. Paul Getty Museum, commonly referred to as the Getty. Set on two campuses — the Getty Center just off the Sepulveda Pass and the Getty Villa in Malibu — both museums offer a welcome escape into a world filled with Greek and Roman antiquities, European paintings, drawings, manuscripts, sculpture and decorative arts, as well as photographs. The Getty Villa will feel especially other-worldly, since it’s a recreation of an ancient Roman country house, and will give you a taste of life in the first century A.D. Creating art, too, relieves stress, and has many other mental health benefits. Why not try an art class, like those offered West L.A. Art Center or POT in Echo Park?

4. Go to the beach.

Naturally, one of L.A.’s most famous features are its beautiful beaches. Long stretches of warm sand can be found up and down coastal Los Angeles. Located near the LAX Airport a hop skip and a jump away from Playa del Rey, Dockweiler State Beach is a little off the beaten path yet offers everything you need, from restrooms to picnic areas and plenty of space for water sports and sunbathing. It’s also one of the few beaches in the area where you can have a bonfire. Not far away in Marina del Rey, there’s a super-quiet, little known beach called Mother’s Beach. Ideal for swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding, Mother’s Beach is known for its wide sandy beach and calm marina waters — perfect for relaxing. There are four E&S Ring communities near these two beaches in Marina del Rey: Esprit, Mariners Village, The Villa at Marina Harborand Water’s Edge at Marina Harbor.

5. Walk in a garden.

Everything about a garden says “slow down” and “relax.” When you take a stroll through a garden, you open yourself up to the intoxicating combination of sound, scent and scenery. Breathe in the fresh air, smell the flowers, listen to a babbling brook. Los Angeles is home to many hidden garden gems. You can take a more contemplative approach and try walking a labyrinth. “Walking the labyrinth is a great way to experience peace and relaxation,” promises the Peace Awareness Labyrinth & Gardens (PALG), a nonprofit spiritual center in the historic West Adams District of Los Angeles — not too far away from The Meadows. “It can be a meditative process for letting go of tension and opening your mind to new ways of thinking.” Visitors are invited to "unwind the mind" by walking the stone labyrinth, modeled after the famous Chartres Cathedral labyrinth in France. The Asian-themed meditation garden features 16 water fountains, a koi pond and several intimate seating areas for reflection and meditation. Many E&S Ring residents also have their own garden-style communities, complete with lush landscaping, to enjoy too — and they don’t even have to get in a car!

6. See the city on horseback.

Studies have shown that horseback riding stimulated mainly positive psychological feelings among riders, including "extremely cheerful, relaxed, happy, or active." If you happen to live near Griffith Park — like the residents of Rancho Los Feliz, why not hop in the saddle and enjoy a look at nature on horseback? Thanks to Sunset Ranch Hollywood, the only horse ranch located in greater Los Angeles, you can enjoy a one-hour trail ride into Griffith Park and a great view of the Hollywood Sign. A two-hour ride to the top of Griffith Park features spectacular 360-degree views of Los Angeles. There are other types of rides to suit your schedule and wants, such as the Lunch Ride and the Sunset Dinner Ride.

7. Lay by the pool.

Did you know that a pool can help you relax? Take a dip into the water, and your body will float in the pool as the stress fades away. The founders of E&S Ring thought of that, and made sure that all of their properties feel resort-like with their own community pools. The idea was to encourage all residents get outside and bask in Southern California’s pleasant Mediterranean climate.

8. Take a bike ride.

Few things in life are more stressful than sitting in your car in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the 405 freeway, aka “The Parking Lot.” For the sake of relaxation, we dare you to step away from your car, and explore the city and its surroundings from a different set of wheels. The city is teeming with relaxing beach side trails and mountain trails fit for every kind of cyclist. We recommend, the 22-mile Marvin Braude Bike Trail, aka The Strand; it often tops the lists of the city’s best bike rides, as the paved bike path begins at Will Rogers State Beach near Pacific Palisades and travels all the way south to Torrance Beach. The best part about this ride? You get a little bit of beach, and a little bit exercise — a double dose of R&R that could bring down your cortisone levels in no time.
