Swap Ideas Day: 5 Bright Ideas for Making Your Next Move Easier

Every company is founded on an idea — whether it’s creating a product that solves a current problem or creating communities where people want to live. E&S Ring Management was founded on the idea that we could create garden apartment communities that give residents the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and “live well” with resort-like amenities, top conveniences and high-tech services designed to improve quality of life. That’s why a day like today – National Swap Ideas Day — is so important to us. We want to be a part of a day that encourages people to share creative or helpful ideas with others, so we can all build on each other’s ideas! After all, ideas — especially good ideas — make the world go ‘round!

In honor of National Swap Ideas Day, we wanted to share some bright ideas for easing one of the most stressful moments in life: moving.

1. Get Organized

Have you ever found yourself wishing that your apartment management company offered moving assistance? Well, E&S Ring has a solution. We have partnered with Updater, a time-saving tool that helps residents organize and complete many of their moving-related tasks. The moving tool is completely customized to our properties, and gives our new and future residents a way to streamline all of your moving to-dos — from connecting you to the right local utility companies to forwarding your mail and notifying businesses you care about in one shot.

2. Take Inventory

Are you the type of person who is super organized? Sortly just might be your dream app. Sortly lets you create a visual inventory by taking photos of your items or scanning QR codes. Here’s how it works: After you input your items, you sort them into category folders by location (like in the bedroom or in the kitchen). You can also tag certain items for easy search and include purchase and warranty dates for even more detail. You can also use the free app to keep track of inventory in boxes — it’s a win-win!

3. Pack a Moving Essentials Bag

Before you start packing, fill a small duffel bag with the essentials you can’t afford to misplace in the ensuing chaos of your move. This might include any medications and important documents you have, smart phone chargers, day-to-day toiletries, and maybe a couple changes of clothes. While this is something you would want to do even if you weren’t moving in a hurry, it’s especially important during a last minute move, when things are likely to get a bit messier and more exhausting.

4. Go Green for Your Move

If you’re looking to go green — and save a little green — in the process, Updater.com gave us this idea: reusable moving boxes. New cardboard moving boxes can be expensive, and trying to find recycled cardboard boxes at your local grocery store can be exhausting and time-consuming. Plus, neither option is the most eco-friendly way to go. Luckily there are companies out there that specialize in delivering reusable plastic moving bins and boxes directly to your home. “In most cases, they'll even pick up the plastic bins after you've had a few days to pack up,” says Updater.com. A few companies offering this option include:

5. Be Smart About Packing

There are plenty of clever packing hacks out there. Here are a few of our favorites from Updater.com, Buzzfeed and other sources: 1) Pack plates vertically, like records — they’ll be less likely to break. 2) Pick a color code for each room and label that room's boxes accordingly. Label the door of each room with the corresponding sticker/tape so that movers know where to place the boxes. 3) Hang your clothes in trash bags. While your clothes are still hanging in the closet, put them inside a trash bag to make unpacking simpler. 4) Snap a picture of the back of your TV and other electronic devices. That way, you know exactly which wires go where when you're setting up in the new place. 5) Put knives inside an old oven mitt to prevent injuries.
